Books that H.E.L.P.

Posted by SaraQ on February 19th, 2008

Buy a book, help a good cause? It’s just that easy right now at Esty thanks to the members of the Bookbinding Etsy Street Team, who have generously donated books for sale to benifit H.E.L.P. International. 100% of the proceeds from these books (minus fees and shipping costs) will be donated to H.E.L.P International, an organization dedicated to providing health care and education for children throughout the world who are orphaned, destitute or disabled. If you want to help, head over to Etsy and check out these lovely books; there’s a wide range of styles and price points, something for everyone we hope!

bookbindingimage.jpgLooking to learn how to make your own books, or brush up on your bookbinding skills? Join me at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio for 24 hours of bookbinding fun! Okay- 24 hours spread over 8, 3 hour sessions, Wednesday nights March 12 - April 30th. In this BookArts Class I’ll be covering basic techniques and materials as well as more in-depth tutorials on specific book forms. Each student will complete five structures to take home: pamphlet stitch, Japanese stab-bound, cased in codex, exposed/ sewn-spine coptic and chain-stitch over ribbon. Details and registration forms are at the APS website . Hope to see you there!

One Resoultion (1/2 way) Down

belgian31.jpgI tackled resolution #1 and made the lovely book you see here, using the secret Belgian binding. I adapted it a tad from the instructions that I found online; instead of weaving in and out of the lacing on the inner spine I ran a chain stitch over each lacing, negating the need for a kettle stitch on the 3rd and 4th signatures. The binding is nice and tight sewn this way- and I love that the book not only lays flat that the covers can be bent back! More new projects as I tackle them. . .

PS- keep your eyes open here for information on my upcoming bookbinding class at the Atlanta Printmakers Studio- I’ll post the flyer and details as soon as they’re ready!
